Creative and Media: 10 months, 3 weeks agoHi media comrades! Just thought I would post a link to a website I created entitled ‘Chameleon,’ back in 2009 when I did my MA in Creative and Media Education at BU.
http://www.creativechameleon.weebly.com
‘Chameleon’ was intentionally created by a ‘teacher’ (or media person) for other teachers (specific to the Creative & Media Diploma!)…[Read more]

Creative and Media: 1 year, 4 months agoHi group, I am sat here writing a proposal for Level 2 courses for next year and I am struggling to decide whether to keep running the Level 2 Creative and Media diploma or not. It’s been an absolute nightmare assessing before the 10th Jan deadline and am not convinced the media/art/performing arts collaboration is giving students enough depth…[Read more]

The picture isn’t looking too bright at the moment. BBC news had a slot yesterday too that slated the functional skills aspect of the diploma and the ex-chief inspector for schools couldn’t commit to the idea that…[Read more]

Creative and Media: 1 year, 7 months agoDon’t forget to come along to the Creative and Media Conference if you’re teaching the diploma this year or next. A great opportunity to see exemplar work, discuss delivery strategies and consider the place of the diploma in the new government’s plans.

What is the future of the diploma? The government’s comments about the diploma seem so woolly…am waiting with baited breath for the next white paper in October.
-
I wouldn’t hold your breath for an official announcement. The govt. won’t want to upset parents by officially scrapping it so they’ll let the schools and parents ‘decide’ by take up numbers. This will ensure that the already low numbers will slowly dwindle and after all the glossy brochures, consultants made-up management roles and expensive…[Read more]

Well sadly in some places the signs are there. I recently heard that Canterbury uni are dropping their 14-19 PGCE and I know of a few schools that have got rid of it. I seem to be in the minority of still thinking that it is a good qualification. It is has quite a few issues to iron out assessment -wise but the concept and the flexibility is…[Read more]

I feel sorry for those teachers who have put a lot of time and effort into trying to make this work and the students who have been persuaded to take it without knowing that in a few years it was likely to be phased out. I’m sure a lot of students have had fantastic experiences but it’s been the biggest waste of money I can remember in education…[Read more]

Yes I hope so too- really don’t want it to be a big waste of mine and the student’s time. It’s very frustrating being at this end, constantly forced to do the new initiatives and then watching them get replaced by something else.
-
Good luck with it all. How many students take it at your school?
-
I have 38 on the level 2 and 20 on the level 3. We’ve timetabled it quite well so that they have a good variety of subjects to take alongside it which I think helps. We’re launching retail this year so I don’t think my school will be giving up on diplomas just yet- I guess we just need to make sure that they’re clear about what they should be…[Read more]

That’s interesting, it’s obviously doing well at your school. Maybe it will survive. Time will tell I guess.

I heard the other day that Skillset want to get out of their Diploma involvement altogether. I am not sure what this would mean though as I don’t know what their role is now. They led the original planning for Creative and Media – I was part of it and a right dog’s breakfast it was – not Skillset’s fault so much as the overall concept – this…[Read more]

Everyone needs a good rant now and again!…and I have had a few rants myself about the diploma! There really has been an exceptional amount of money and time pumped into it that it would be incredible if it just drifted away into the ether. I guess if Skillset are severing ties then that’s the beginning of the end of any positive publicity – not…[Read more]

I daresay a lot of people involved in its creation are now distancing themselves, maybe they’ll even be lending their ’expertise’ to where cuts can be made. It’s time to ’move forward’ not to dwell on mistakes of the past blah, blah…

Hi Danny and Cary – would you mind if I used some of your comments in my Masters assignment? The conference that I’m running is for my final unit for the MA Creative and MEdia Education at BU and I am just writing a supporting document to contextualise the event. I wouldn’t use your names but you have made some interesting observations about the…[Read more]

If you can get any sense out of my comments you’re more than welcome to use them. Good luck with your MA.

Thanks Danny. Really appreciate that.
