MLC2011
Public Group active 8 months agoThis group exists to collect ideas and suggestions for next year\\\’s conference. These could be about speakers or workshop providers to invite, how to get teachers and students to attend, sponsors we might approach, and different ways of organising the event. If you didn\\\’t attend this year\\\’s conference, it would be interesting to hear why not, and what might tempt you to come next year. Obviously price is a factor: if we could offer a subsidised fee for classroom teachers to attend, how much could you pay? Would you prefer weekend or mid-week? And where in the UK would you prefer the conference to take place?
You may currently still join a group but and read past
discussions but be aware that all discussion now takes
place in the forum environment

MLC2011: 1 year, 2 months agoWe’re almost ready to go public with the website for this year’s conference and you can see it already at http://www.mlc2011.org.uk. It will be residential – fish and chip supper and quiz scheduled for first evening; £30 extra for drinks+screening+dinner (and maybe an after-dinner speaker?) on the second night. Various strategies under way to get more…[Read more]

Hi Cary, Just had a look at the website and it does look fab. I would really like to attend this year but I think it will come down to whether we can find the money at school for it for me and if the students can afford it. I was thinking I could take 6 of my most engaged students but looking at it even if we do early bird for just the Tuesday,…[Read more]

Dear Holly,
Just to let you know that the early bird rate for teachers will stay standard (Kenes are about to change this) so at least you can register when you like. I hope you can get the students there for the Tuesday day rate – where are you based? Maybe there’s another source of funding to help you? Also note that we are trying to get…[Read more]-
That would be great Cary. We’re based in Tonbridge in Kent so it is quite a distance. I’ll speak to my school and see if there might be another avenue for some funding too. Thanks.
Holly

MLC2011: 1 year, 4 months agoMight it be a possibility to piggyback on an event like BETT – since lots of teachers are already there?

MLC2011: 1 year, 4 months agoThe actual conference stats are as follows: 246 people attended from 29 different countries. 161 delegates were from the UK and 85 from outside the UK. 92 delegates (just over 37%) were from universities: the rest were from various sectors of education, including public administration, educational charities, training and project providers, etc.…[Read more]

MLC2011: 1 year, 5 months agoI wrote this post today and only afterwards did I read all previous posts… so, sorry if I’m covering old ground, but I thought sod it I’ll post it anyway…
I came across a certain post regarding how high profile photo-oriented conferences could be made more engaging/productive:…[Read more]

MLC2011: 1 year, 5 months agoWould people be interested in attending a form of TeachMeet at next year’s conference? Personally I felt that what was lacking from this year’s (terrific and well organised) conference was dicussions about what was happening in the classroom and throughout education generally – from pre-school years to A level years. To have an evening event in…[Read more]

Hello Andy
I couldn’tmake this year’s conference but will be there next year and would definitely welcome a teachmeet type event. I have only attended them virtually and would love to be involved so YES! -
Definitely!
-
Thank you both. I discussed this with someone today and it was muted that maybe a Teachmeet style event could take place during the conference, which could also seep into the evening. I am going to put the wheels in motion to get this organised for next year as I am passionate about it. Any help/ideas/proposals would be greatly…[Read more]

Hi Andy – yes it will be great if you can continue to develop this idea and keep involved with the conference planning for this year. There’s a sad shortage of toes to tread on so feel free! We are hoping to organise a Thursday-to-Saturday event and to make it residential which will open up far more possibilities for the kind of social engagement…[Read more]

HI Andy – haven’t heard from you for a bit – are the wheels in motion?

PLEASE tell me how we can get more teachers to attend. What’s a reasonable price for two days? What’s a reasonable day rate? Opinions on this year’s fee fell about evenly between ”very reasonable” and ”too expensive”. Or is it not a fees issue, but more the fact that media teaching doesn’t count as a curricular priority?

MLC2011: 1 year, 5 months agoThe mere fact that this conference happened is a miracle! So let’s be thankful for that and well done Cary, David and all the others for pulling it all together. Teachers and researchers coming together is a great thing but given the time restraints, and requirements of funders it may have been a bit confusing regarding what people could…[Read more]

MLC2011: 1 year, 5 months agoOk, my view is that we need two different types of conference-
1. the big one, which attracts a very far flung audience but not many UK teachers and can be about big themes and stuff that people have researched elsewhere on a micro scale
2. a small one for Uk teachers with the aim of really bringing sectors together, so we have workshops where…[Read more]-
Well said, a good idea about two conferences too.

…but it’s also really important for teachers to listen to the academics too (well, some of them)
…I certainly agree about cheapness and hands-on/off “workshops”
…How about keynotes/plenaries with follow-up seminars/discussion groups?
…Loads of teachers get cover and expenses to go to an event like BETT …. BUT entry is free and…[Read more]-
agree but I think we may have to be realistic- teachers can’t get out for an event of this nature and if they didn’t come to this one, I can’t see them coming to the next one at the same time next year. And there’s no way it could be free without a wodge of sponsor money in a venue like QE2. I don’t really think it’s saying “you’re…[Read more]

No, the do in Islington was good – it’s the impression we give that concerns me…

One of he reasons MLC2010 was on Friday/Saturday was so that teachers could come just for the Saturday. But they didn’t. Also it is notoriously difficult to get both primary and secondary teachers to the same event. When it’s addressed to both, both know that it’s not specifically for their own sector/courses so it’s harder for them to get…[Read more]

Why should the MEA run a big conference that teachers don’t attend? I am determined to get teachers to the big conference because it seems to me that one of the most important things about it was bringing the two sectors (teachers and academic) together – though bear in mind that there were only 92 academics out of 246 delegates and a large…[Read more]

I’d love it if they’d come, but they didn’t come this time in mid-November so how we might get them to come next time in mid-November is the challenge. It is very evident that teachers are very limited in terms of the amount of CPD they can attend- a mix of school/college budget cuts and the ‘rarely cover’ issue, which is also stopping lots…[Read more]

Hi Pete, I like your idea of the Saturday summer conference as an alternative. I didn’t make it to the conference this year as our calendar is jam packed with performing arts events around then and these take priority as that’s our school’s specialism and therefore I can’t get cover.
Having said that I would say that the main issue is access…[Read more]
