Multimodal Literacy 1 year, 4 months agoThis is a set of images used to market Black Swan. I used this as the first lesson with an adult class. We analysed the structure and devices used in the ads and postcards and then I finished by talking about all the modes that we had analysed (plus extras that would be needed for non-print texts).

Hi Rick
Fascinating stuff on Black Swan. I’m intrigued that it was a British design company. Just one observation and apologies if you’ve already made this point and I’ve missed it. The institutional issue – UK film posters are landscape ‘quads’ as distinct from the portrait posters in the US. I don’t think the designs work as well as on…[Read more]
Hi Roy
I have not seen any landscape quads in Edinburgh. All portrait in bus shelters. Have not checked multiplexes. The Cameo art cinema had a box with several hundred postcard sets in it plus hundreds more behind the box office. Have uploaded my/my adult class’s analysis of Black Swan in Film Language Resources.
I guess the traditional posters are disappearing. The US format seems to be spreading internationally. I can’t say that I noticed the poster when I went to see the film. The odd thing is that as promotion online becomes even more important, a portrait shaped design doesn’t work with a computer/video screen. Idid find this image (but it was a…[Read more]
